Port, Fortresses and Group of Monuments, Cartagena

Cartagena is the place to go - for sure. The old town at the
Carribean Sea with its lovely colonial style buildings is a place
to relax and enjoy. Many museums are waiting for a visit - but
the atmosphere alone is wonderful.
The different fortifications are very interesting to explore,
especially the tunnel systems that were built as a safe place
and also to have an escape-route. Lot´s of police guarantee
a safe visit.

Historic Centre of Santa Cruz de Mompox

It is a long way to Mompox. Travelling by car or bus you need
ferries in between the the bad roads - making the whole trip
by boat seems to be a good idea. Situated in the plains near
river Magdalena it is hot and humid.
Nevertheless you think to be in another world, where the time
stood still for more than hundred years. Of course the little
mototaxis are cruising around, but the old buildings often are
used for the same purpose as long ago. The little town does a
lot to restore everything to its initial beauty. It is not Cartagena
- but the right place to visit off the beaten path.

San Agustín Archeological Park

Although the details about the culture that lived here from
the 1st to the 8th century are not discovered yet, it is fascinating
to see the results of their work. It is the largest group of
megalithic monuments in South America, sometimes you are reminded
of the Celtic tomb graves you can find in Europe or elsewhere
in the world.
The "wood of sculptures" is a lovely place to walk
through history, although the graves and statues in the open
field are a little more impressive. The surrounding area for
itself might make a stay worthwile.

National Archeological Park of Tierradentro

We drove a long and very muddy road to Inza, which is right
next to Tierradentro. But when we came there, the police told
us not to proceed any further. The guerrilla would be very active
in the moment, so we would be possibly be a good target. This
was in January 2009.
As the Columbian government does a lot to get control over
the different movements, we are sure it will be a good place
to visit in the future. The tombs are underground and fascinating
for sure. The two pictures of the figures from Tierradentro were
taken in Bogota, at the Gold Museum.
