City of Quito

The capital of Ecuador is not far from the 0° Meridian,
but has a agrable climate, because of an altitude of 2.800m.
Built in the 16th century on Inca ruins its historic features
are interesting.
We could not catch the flair of the "best preserved and
least altered town centre" - it is a busy southamerican
city with some nice places and buildings. Fascinating was only
the baroque interior of some churches.
A nice place to visit, but no dream destination.

Sangay National Park

Although we did not see a Andean Condor, we were fascinated
by the area. Two active volcanoes, lakes, waterfalls, glaciers,
rainforests and a huge biodiversity makes this park a great pool
of fascination. The rainfall was very stable for long periods
- so sunshine pictures are not easily done.
Accessability is a little hard - but perhaps exactly this
prevents a destruction of its beauty.

Historic Centre of Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca

Around 1530 Charles V. issued guidelines how to plan a Spanish
city - and the foundation of Cuenca 30 years later exactly followed
this idea. Although many of the buildings do not date that far
back (built in the 18th and 19th century) we did like their style
and the relaxed atmosphere. It is a busy town - and the traffic
problem is obvious too, but not as dense as in other towns.
It was very positive to see that a lot of old buildings are
renovated nicely, although some black-tinted-modern art-buildings
did not fit into the picture. We had a good time in Cuenca, but
we did not buy one of the famous straw-hats....
